Onyx

Onyx belongs to the category of chalcedony quartz stones, just like carnalian and agate. In nature, onyx is crystallized in strata and is characterized by straight longitudinal bands in various colors: black, black and white, red and white, orange and brown, pink with brown and white, and finally, green and brown. The most popular stone of this variety is the black onyx. Owing to its unique appearance many tales from ancient times have been spun around it. One ancient Greek legend recounts the story of an artist who sculpted the hands of Venus in the stone. The artist’s deed enraged the gods and they reacted by turning the fingernails of the sculptor’s hands into black stone. According to this legend, this is how the name onyx, meaning fingernail, originated .

Apart from its prominence as a precious stone, onyx is also used in the creation of various objets d’art, ranging from vases and figurines to chess pieces. In the holistic sphere, the onyx is believed to be good for treating problems related to bone marrow, helping the body to absorb vitamins and minerals, and for enhancing the body’s hormonal balance. Psychologically, onyx eases the pain of romantic separations, increases one’s self-control and assists the individual in coping with fears and pressures.
